Bye Bye G-Dub 2008

So with all eyes on Iowa recently leading up to the caucus on Jan 3, and with every candidate imaginable campaigning non-stop through this fine state I got to thinking about how we all rallied behind John Kerry back in Pittsburgh. What are your guys thoughts on the current candidates? I for one am an Obama fan through and through.

I like Obama if only for the things he mentioned when he made a stop at Google. He promised to bring broadband internet access to all Americans (which I'm all in favor of)(http://www.barackobama.com/issues/technology/). He also said something in response to a question of NAFTA. Instead of some other Democrats who would change the treaty or limit free-trade in other ways, he said something to the effect 'I will not guarantee that every American is employed, but I would guarantee that every American is employable.' (http://www.barackobama.com/issues/economy/) That is something I respect very much, and also the contention of the current book I'm reading (The World is Flat, ISBN-10: 0312425074).

Also he's against the war in Iraq (http://www.barackobama.com/issues/iraq/), which all Dems are, but he has the benefit of not having been around when it was first voted on in the Senate, so he can say he never supported it.

I like Obama too, aside from some of his campaign planks which Funkmasta Q mentioned I also like the fact that he is charismatic (good yiddish word FYI), socially liberal and has a strong speaking presence. I am discovering as I get older that I am becoming more fiscally conservative than I once was. I worry that the democrats if/when elected are going to continue to levy taxes on the upper minutae of american society. The problem with this tactic (and there is a great OpEd in the WSJ last week about how Bush has raised taxes for the wealthy more than any republican in history) is that the top 5% of our country's earners also happen to do a lot of the spending. This may be a question of the chicken or the egg, but I am very worried about the evident slowing of the economy and do not want to put more burdens than already exist on it. Maybe we should all move to India and Japan, like our smarter brethren. Also I hate Hillary Clinton, and can not bring myself to vote for a republican at least in this election.
